Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful. - William Morris
Hello and Happy Sunday My People!!
Today, we will talk about why thrifting is important for you. But those people who don't know the meaning of thrifting, first of all, we would like to tell them what is thrifting?
WHAT IS THRIFTING?
Thrifting refers to the act of shopping at a thrift store, flea market, garage sale, or a shop of a charitable organization, usually with the intent of finding interesting items at a low price. A larger philosophy permeates the act of thrifting which celebrates the recycling of formerly-owned items, finding new use and a new love for vintage material goods which had been thrown out, and the thrill of imagining what the former life of the item was like. A zine called "Thrift Score", published in the 1990s by Ms. Al Hoff celebrated this lifestyle. Many "resale" shops pull their more interesting items from thrift stores and sell them at higher prices - the premium is because the "digging for gold" has already been done.
Thrift stores did not exist in India before, it was very difficult to find a single thrift store in India. These stores run very much in outside countries. People who came from outside countries were very much addicted to thrifting. Due to the lack of thrift stores in India, they used to face a lot of trouble during shopping.
But now thrift stores are also found in India. There are not many physical stores in India but online stores are very popular. Such as on Instagram.

WHY I BEGAN THRIFTING?
I belong to a middle-class family and so I have always lived on a budget and I feel that self-control came naturally with that. I never wanted to buy anything that I didn’t need but that was only till school. As soon as I came to college, I realized this sense of freedom to spend on whatever I wanted in a college and sometimes I spent a lot of extra money on useless stuff but soon I regretted it.
Soon after I stopped buying a lot of stuff and consuming consciously became my great habit and love for mama earth. So I use to and still shop from only flea markets and only jeans and shoes from proper stores. Whatever I bought was useless for me, which I did not use at all, I started giving them to others.
And soon I stopped buying a lot of things and consume consciously became one of my big habits. This realization led me down a path of a sustainable and minimalist lifestyle. I realized that every individual effort makes a difference. So I only shop at flea markets and only buy shoes and some clothes like jeans from proper stores.

10 REASONS - THRIFTING IS BENEFICIAL TO YOU
The fast fashion is one of the largest pollutants of the world ranking higher than aviation and transportation, thrift stores.
1. It's good for the environment.
This is the best reason for me why I love thrifting. Buying thrift, vintage, and second-hand clothing helps in reducing waste and pollution. Every garment purchased second-hand means one less new one produced, which is important because regardless of material, the production of clothing is costly to the environment. Producing synthetic fibers like polyester requires lots of energy, as well as crude oil like petroleum; byproducts include toxic gases and chemicals. Sadly, pesticides used on most plants mean that even cotton and linen garments have a negative impact. Transportation-related pollution also decreases when clothing is re-used, as new clothes are much more likely to travel long distances before being sold than are their second-hand counterparts.

2. It's good for your wallet.
It has wisdom and caution in the management of money. It creates a more sustainable option for smaller budgets, or for those of us that simply don't want to spend big bucks on clothing. Unfortunately, if you are living in an area where thrifting is quite popular, you might be looking at price tags in the double digits rather than the single digits. But still, I am definitely going with thrifting as it is unique, being given a second life, and is often better made.
3. It's good for your community.
When you buy second hand, not only are you doing something green, you are also helping your own local community. By purchasing from individuals via online platform, garage sales, or local consignment/charity thrift stores. you are stimulating the local economy instead of putting your money into the hands of some giant faceless corporation.
4. It’s good for your wardrobe.
Thrifting is the most sustainable way to add new items to your wardrobe. Buying new doesn't always mean buying better, vintage & second-hand items can give your wardrobe a new lease of life without adding to the devastating impact of the garment industry.

5. It's a good way to support charities or NGOs.
95% of discarded clothing can be recycled or upcycled. Donate your unloved items to your local charity or clothes banks. I love the idea of this money going towards these causes. There is no better feeling than finding a new purpose for something old.
6. It's a good way to recycle your own used items.
Thrift stores are not only great to shop at, but they are also a great way to offload some of your old items and give them second homes. I love the idea of giving an item back it’s dignity, by making it useful and loved once again.

7. You can tell a story about your clothes.
I always find it really interesting to think of who might have worn the items before me. And some people have an interesting story about their products.
Let's take a slower, more considered approach to buy new items. Thrifting is just fun, plain, and simple. And with so many positive reasons to do it, if you haven’t already, you definitely should get crackin’!
